about

Hi! My name is Suzi Lott, artist and founder behind Spectrums by Suzi.  After 21 years of being a nurse, I decided to retire and pursue my love for stained glass. I pull inspiration from some of my other passions: Nature, adventure and traveling. With over 21 years of stained glass experience, I hope to bring a spectrum of light to each client.  Whether you are looking to purchase a stained glass sun catcher or stained glass panel, or take a class  I am here to make that process simple and fun while creating exactly how you envision your piece of art.

Be sure to check out my class schedule at Spectrums by Suzi Studio.

Let's get started!

The process

1

 Taking Inspiration & Sketching

Deciding the size, color and types of glass are all taken into account when designing stained glass.  When creating large panels, design is extremely important for structural integrity.

2

1

Cutting & Smoothing

Once a pattern is created, the chosen sheets of glass are hand-cut to the proper shape. Then, the edges must be smoothed using a grinder.  This will prepare the glass for the next step.

Foiling & Burnishing

Foiling and Burnishing is also referred to as the Tiffany Method.  Every piece of glass is wrapped with copper foil and then burnished.

3

Soldering

Soldering is my favorite part of the whole process. The pieces are now placed on the pattern and lined up to make sure it’s a perfect fit.  Flux is applied to all the copper foiled edges in order to solder.  Each piece is soldered 3 times starting with the front, then the back, and finally a beaded layer to the front.

5

Patina

The solder is cleaned of flux and a patina finish is applied.  The patina is a liquid that when in contact with the solder results in a chemical reaction turning the silver finish from dark gunmetal to a dark bronze color.

5

Sealing

The final step is sealing the artwork.  The entire piece is now sealed with a compound finishing wax to seal the patina.  It is waxed,  polished and ready to sparkle.
